Defending Principles

Control / Restraint / Patience – sometimes you need to wait

Compact – get narrow as a group

Dictate – use body shape to encourage where attacker goes

Concentration – stay focused

Win the Ball – ‘steal’

the 4 D’s – 1. Delay forward movement, 2. Deny space, 3. Deflect the ball, 4. Defend the goal

Regain – mentality when possession gained

Support/ Cover – get in position to work with ‘pressing’ player

Balance – defend against the next attacker and the space near the ball

Pressure – work quickly towards the attacker with the ball

Depth – the distance near the defending goal

Distance – the travel time to the ball

Angles – in position to effect the ball and adapt to the movement
